Quenched/unquenched nano bioactive glass-ceramics: Synthesis and in vitro bioactivity evaluation in Ringer’s solution with BSA

Abstract: The paper reports the first attempt at the method of changing cooling treatment of synthesizing in order to investigate its effect on the physical properties of sol-gel derived nano-bioactive glass-ceramics in the system 58SiO 2 -33CaO--9P 2 O 5 (wt.%). We hypothesized that the method of cooling may affect the properties of nano-bioactive glass-ceramics. To test this hypothesis, two different methods of cooling treatment were applied after calcinations in the synthesis. Both quenched and unquenched nano-bioact… Show more

“…The β-sheet conformations of silk fibroin correspond to the characteristic peaks at 1627 cm −1 (amide I), 1519 cm −1 (amide II) and 1235 cm −1 (amide III) after cross-linking of scaffolds with EDC/NHS [40]. The FTIR spectra of SF/PVA/BGs showed vibration bands at 470 cm −1 and 1082 cm −1 which are associated with Si-O-Si bending mode [41]. The peak at 970 cm −1 assigned to the non-bridging oxygen together with the surface active silanols (Si-OH) groups, which facilitate the enhanced rate of apatite formation [42].…”

“…The shoulder peak at 958 cm −1 was assigned to the Si-O-Ca vibration mode. The peak at 575 cm −1 arose from the stretching vibration of phosphate group [41]. Moreover, peaks at 1426 cm −1 (bending of OH group and wagging of CH 2 group) and 1326 cm −1 (stretching of C=O) are associated with PVA nanofibrous structure.…”

“…The evaluation of apatite and ⁄or mineral complex depositions in scaffolds, when immersed in simulated body fluids, is a commonly accepted method to establish the bioactivity of a constituent to remineralization (42) . Ringer's solution was used based on previous studies (14,15) .…”

“…The powder was mixed with the liquid according to the manufacturer's instructions the insulin syringe was used to standardize the amount applied on each disk and the material was applied on the surface of the dentin discs using a plastic instrument and left to cure. All discs were then stored in Ringer's solution that was changed daily (14,15) . The discs were retested for permeability at one week and four weeks.…”
