Queer Theory and the Specter of Materialism

Abstract: This article argues that the development of queer theory as a field has been critically shaped by a desire to dissociate the studies of gender and sexuality from material concerns. Though what is meant by “the material” varies wildly from context to context, queer critiques of materialism have produced an entrenched impression of the incommensurability between queer theory and Marxism. Tracing the varied ways in which the notion of the material has been deployed by queer critics to pose questions about the eco… Show more

“…Despite past research findings that loneliness and isolation lead to materialism and symbolic consumption (Gentina et al , 2018; Liu, 2020), little empirical work has been undertaken to identify the motivations behind the luxury brand purchase intention of isolated consumers during times of crisis. Drawing on the tend-and-befriend theory (Taylor, 2006), this paper builds and tests a theoretical model that explains how feeling of isolation leads to purchasing luxury brands.…”

“…Since the late 2000s, scholars have started to reunite queer critiques and structural materialism to overcome this schism (see Chitty, 2020;Floyd, 2009;Henderson, 2013;Liu, 2020;Penney, 2014;Smith, 2020;Valocchi, 2019). However, they remain divergent on how to formulate queer Marxism (see Penney, 2014, pp.…”

“…By asserting that democratisation has unleashed ‘ethnic politics’ and castigating Taiwanese ‘young queer progressives’ for their ‘geography of blame’ (i.e., China bad, Taiwan good) that has led to ‘ethnic cleansing or purging’ of older KMT mainlanders (as Hans Tao‐Ming Huang tendentiously claims), 9 these scholars effectively vilify pro‐Taiwan tongzhi and their social movements. Such an approach stems from a professed aversion to “an identity‐based mode of analysis” and is blamed on “a particular logic of American liberal pluralism” (Liu, 2020: 27) that Taiwan's LGBTQ rights movement has presumably appropriated. Liu (2019: 411) validates his conclusion by avowing that the ‘hidden context’ we must uncover about the dogged sentiment of Taiwaneseness is “the American installment of a ‘Cold War structure of feeling’” and presumably not a genuine desire for self‐determination.…”
