Quaternization of Poly(2-diethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) Brush-Grafted Magnetic Mesoporous Nanoparticles Using 2-Iodoethanol for Removing Anionic Dyes

Abstract: Magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4-MSNs) were successfully synthesized with a relatively high surface area of 568 m2g−1. Fe3O4-MSNs were then modified with poly(2-diethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) brushes using surface-initiated ARGET atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) (Fe3O4@MSN-PDMAEMA). Since the charge of PDEAEMA is externally regulated by solution pH, tertiary amines in the polymer chains were quaternized using 2-iodoethanol to obtain cationic polymer chains with a permanent… Show more

“…In particular, adsorption is regarded as a reliable treatment owing to simple processing and low cost, but it is connected with the production of solid waste in significant amounts. 7 In recent times, polymers have garnered significant attention as viable materials for water treatment due to their advantageous characteristics such as low toxicity, customizable functionalities, and cost-effectiveness. 12 Certain polymers exhibit a branch-like structure, falling into categories like dendronized, multiarmed star, and hyperbranched polymers.…”

“…Magnetic MSNPs were modified with quaternized poly(2diethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) with 2-iodoethanol (Fe 3 O 4 @ MSN-QPDMAEMA) as an effective nanoadsorbent. 27 The synthesized materials demonstrated high adsorption capacities toward the removal of methyl orange (MO) and sunset yellow (E110) dyes from contaminated water, with maximum adsorption capacities of MO and E110 of 294 and 194.8 mg g −1 , respectively. MSNPs modified with poly(2-(tertbutylamino)ethyl methacrylate) brushes have been synthesized and applied as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of chlorophenoxy herbicides and paracetamol from contaminated water.…”

“…For example, chitosan-coated nanoparticles modified with diethylenetriamine pentaacetate have been synthesized to improve the selective adsorption of lead (II) and methylene blue (MB) [44]. Magnetic MSNPs have been fabricated and quaternized with 2-iodoethanol to remove anionic dyes from aqueous solutions, resulting in improved removal efficiency [45].…”
