Quasifree kaon photoproduction from nuclei in a relativistic approach

Abstract: We compute the recoil polarization of the lambda hyperon and the photon asymmetry for the quasifree photoproduction of kaons in a relativistic mean-field approximation to the Walecka model. Our motivation for studying polarization observables is threefold. First, polarization observables are more effective discriminators of subtle dynamics than the unpolarized cross section. Second, earlier nonrelativistic calculations suggest that polarization observables are relatively insensitive to distortions effects. Fin… Show more

“…Historically [7], strangeness photoproduction from nuclei is considered as one of the optimal ways to study the formation of hypernuclei [6,[8][9][10]. The hypernuclear production in γA reactions is part of the program at the Jefferson Laboratory [11] as well as the study of the K + -meson production mechanism in photo-nuclear reactions [12].…”

“…In Refs. [14,15] a general formalism has been developed for the study of a variety of quasifree processes in the relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation (RPWIA). This formalism is now applied to the (e, e ′ p) reaction in a mean-field approximation to the Walecka model [33].…”

“…As such, we develop our model of the nuclear weak transition matrix element for KY-production based on the photo-and electroproduction of mesons in association with baryons from nuclei. 29,30,31,32,33 In doing so, we invoke the impulse approximation whereby one assumes that the incident neutrino interacts with a single bound (off-shell) nucleon inside nuclear medium via the exchange of a single weak gauge boson, and subsequently a pseudoscalar meson is produced in association with hyperon. The rest of the nucleons behave like spectators and make up the residual nucleus.…”
