Inclusive distributions are presented for final-state 7r° and 77° mesons produced in yp interactions. For photon energies from 50 to 130 GeV, both cross sections scale for fractional momenta #^0.30. The average transverse momentum for both mesons is approximately constant with energy and equal to 0.51 ±0.05 GeV/c at large x F . The 77%-° ratio similarly rises from 0.07±0.03 at x F =0.38 to 0.30±0.09 at x F =0.90. The 7T° distributions are in good agreement with those seen in the scattering of highly virtual incident photons.PACS numbers: 13.60.Le, 13.60.HbWe report on measurements of the inclusive production of ir° and 77 0 mesons in the interaction of photons of energies between 50 and 130 GeV with protons in a liquid hydrogen target. Our results are presented in terms of the square of the transverse momentum, p ± 2 , and of the fractional longitudinal momentum, x F . Our data span the region 0.2**p ± *z 1.5 GeV/c, and# F >0.30. Hence, they fall mainly within the photon fragmentation region.It is interesting to compare these data with prior results taken at lower incident photon energy, in order to check the accuracy of the scaling hypothesis for photoproduction. Another instructive comparison can be performed with inclusive distributions for reactions initiated by highly virtual photons. Systematic analysis of available data for ω-meson photoproduction is given in frame of Regge theory. At photon energies above 20 GeV the γ+p→ω+p reaction is entirely dominated by Pomeron exchange. However, it was found that Pomeron exchange model can not reproduce the γ+p→ρ+p and γ+p→ω+p data at high energies simultaneously with the same set of parameters. The comparison between ρ and ω data indicates a large room for meson exchange contribution to ω-meson photoproduction at low energies. It was found that at low energies the dominant contribution comes from π and f2-meson exchanges. There is smooth transition between the meson exchange model at low energies and Regge theory at high energies.

Using the factorization model at high energies the estimate for the yy + p0q5 reaction cross section is obtained in the W,, energy region from 11.5 to 18.4 GeV: a(yy -+ pod) = 1.2-2.4 nb. A comparison of this estimate with the recent ARGUS data, a(yy + pO+) = 0.16 & 0.16 nb for 3.25 5 W,, 5 3.5 GeV, shows that between 3.5 and 18.4 GeV the yy -+ p0q5 reaction cross section can increase by an order of magnitude. A similar increase would be a real challenge for our current knowledge about the dynamics of quasi-two-body reactions and would also signify that in the reaction yy + pO+ at W,, G 3.5 GeV we encountered a new unknown phenomenon. The cross sections for other VV' final states at high energies, calculated assuming factorization, do not differ so dramatically from what has been measured so far at lower energies.PACS number(s): 13.60.Le, 13.85.Fb
