Quasi Self-Excited DFIG-Based Wind Energy Conversion System

Abstract: This paper introduces a new configuration of the DFIG-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) employing only a reduced-size Rotor Side Converter (RSC) in tandem with a supercapacitor. In the proposed structure, the Grid Side Converter (GSC) utilized in conventional DFIG-based WECSs is successfully eliminated. This is accomplished by employing the hydraulic transmission system (HTS) as a continuously variable and shaft decoupling transmission unit. This transforms the conventional constant-ratio drives by pr… Show more

“…In a HTS, the hydraulic pump housed in a nacelle transfer the aerodynamic power of the wind turbine to pressurized fluid. Then, the pressurized fluid creates a driving torque and turns the hydraulic motor and generator placed at the ground level 25 . Various HTSs have been investigated in the literature 33 .…”

“…Utilizing a hydraulic transmission system (HTS) as a split‐shaft in wind energy conversion systems (WECS) can provide these decouples 23,24 . Furthermore, Utilizing a doubly‐fed induction generator (DFIG) alongside the HTS can reduce the system components and sizes 25 . This configuration can be employed to integrate a HESS without additional supporting hardware.…”
