Quasi-Ordered Nanosphere-Based Photonic Crystals with High-Fastness Structural Colors via Screen Printing: Implications for Textile Printing and Dyeing

Abstract: Patterned photonic crystals (PCs) have great development potential in the textile field because of their unique high-saturation iridescent pattern displays. Herein, PC-produced patterns were printed on the fabric surface via screen printing technology. The nanosphere dispersion has reached the required level of viscosity for printing (2435 mPa s) and possessed obvious shear thinning after adding 2.5 wt% of synthetic thickener with strong thickening ability. The interference of the thickener to the self-assembl… Show more

“…However, the iridescent effect of patterned PCs obtained was still not sufficiently obvious as long-range ordered PCs. 26 Ge et al developed a method of preparing patterned PCs with angle-dependent colors by combining screen printing and photocuring process. With SiO 2 granules/monomers as ink, patterns were constructed on the substrate surface through screen printing, and the patterned PCs were finally formed by UV curing.…”

“…As one important access for flexible devices, screen printing stands out as a result of its fast pattern production, low cost, 12,13 and scalability, 14,15 making it a key focus in areas such as transparent conductive films, 16−20 photothermal conversion devices, 21−23 and biosensing sensors. 24−27 The good homogeneity and viscosity are favorable for functional inks of screen printing.…”

“…The ordered structure composed by microspheres is a three-dimensional photonic crystal. The crystal structure has photonic bandgap characteristics, which can reflect the visible light of specific wavelengths to form structural colors [24][25][26]. By adjusting the size of the microspheres, the optical properties of a photonic crystal structure can be changed to produce diffraction effects on different wavelengths of visible light, revealing a variety of colors [20].…”
