Quasi-Isotropic and Pseudo-Ductile Highly Aligned Discontinuous Fibre Composites Manufactured with the HiPerDiF (High Performance Discontinuous Fibre) Technology

Abstract: Conventional composite materials reinforced with continuous fibres display high specific strength but have a number of drawbacks including: the elastic-brittle behaviour, difficulties in producing defect-free components of complex shape with high-volume automated manufacturing processes, and inherent lack of recyclability. Highly aligned, discontinuous fibre-reinforced composites (ADFRCs) are truly beneficial for mass production applications, with the potential to offer better formability and comparable mechan… Show more

“…Relevant parameters taken from 46 are summarized in Table 1. Those data not available from 43–46 are specified following, 38 that is, σu,cm=1.5σu,tm and σu,sm=0.5σu,tmσu,cm. It is noticed that the matrix compressive and shear strengths are in fact inactive for a longitudinal tensile strength prediction.…”

“…The short fibers in the composite films prepared by HiPerDiF were nearly unidirectionally arranged. 44 Highly aligned carbon and glass SFRCs have been reported, 45 for which the mechanical and geometric parameters are summarized in Table 1. As practically used SFRCs are more often fabricated by an injection molding process, an additional Glass-2/PBT material system with the experiment available is also studied in this work.…”
