This chapter reports on a workflow aimed at obtaining deeper insights into spark ignition engines using thermodynamic modelling. This workflow is divided into two steps: (i) Auto-calibration of combustion and heat transfer models using AVL Boost ® and AVL Design Explorer; and (ii) in-cylinder exergy analysis using Wolfram Mathematica ® . Model calibration is usually based on experimental pressure curve and combustion data. However, there is a gap in methods that generate accurate simulation results, while calibrating the combustion and heat transfer models without prior experimental results. Thus, the authors proposed an approach in their earlier work to address this gap. In this chapter, this proposed approach has been complemented with exergy analysis to form a complete workflow for engine research using simulation. This workflow was applied to a 4-cylinder gasoline engine template model as a case study. First, the combustion and heat transfer models are parametrized and used as design variables of an optimization problem. The objective functions in this problem are the combustion phasing, here defined as the crank angle in which the peak cylinder pressure occurs CA pp , and the mechanical load, here defined as the indicated mean effective pressure IMEP. The appropriate temperature constraints were included to guarantee that the engine model was representative of the physical problem. The optimization problem is then solved for a target IMEP and CA pp and the results are analyzed. Afterwards, we begin the exergy analysis of the engine to obtain deeper insights. The resulting curves for the thermodynamic state properties and species' molar fraction are exported from the simulation software to a program in Wolfram Mathematica that does the exergy analysis of the engine, providing deeper insights into the useful work available in the engine, losses due to heat transfer, losses in the exhaust gases, and combustion irreversibilities. This analysis can be very useful in determining the best fuel mixture, operating conditions, and areas for improvement.

In this research, a thermodynamic zero-dimensional model has been done to predict performance characteristics (in-cylinder pressure, heat released, and the thermal efficiency) of a diesel engine with the use of biodiesel–diesel fuel blends (B0, B20, B50, B80, and B100) at different compression ratios (14, 15, 16, 17, and 18). The corresponding mathematical and thermodynamic relationships have been solved in MATLAB. Based on the experimental tests, it was found that the developed model can predict the engine variables sufficiently. According to the results, the heat release rate and the cylinder pressure increased for all fuel blends by an increase in the compression ratio. Moreover, with the increasing biodiesel amount in the fuel blend (up to 50%) heat release rate and the cylinder pressure increased but these variables have a reduction when biodiesel percentage increases from 50 to 100 due to the lower heating value of waste cooking oil methyl ester in comparison with neat diesel fuel. Moreover, according to the experimental tests, carbon monoxide emission was reduced when biodiesel proportion increased in the fuel blend but the nitrogen oxides emitted from the engine enhanced when biodiesel amount in the fuel mixture increased. According to the results, it can be concluded that B50 has better combustion characteristics among all fuel blends.

Nowadays, researchers are very interested in improving the stability and solubility of blending diesel fuel with a high percentage of ethanol. As a result, the goal of this paper was to find a way to use the surfactant of Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) substance to blend ethanol with diesel fuel to a level of 40%. Diesel fuel is mixed with ethanol in volumetric proportions of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, as well as a tiny amount of TBP from 1 to 4%. The prepared blends were the subject of an experiment evaluation by fueling a direct injection diesel engine. This engine is a water-cooled, commercial diesel engine, single cylinder, and four-stroke with 12 kW maximum power. The four blends were evaluated as clean fuel mixtures of 10% ethanol/90% diesel/1% TBP, 20% ethanol/80% diesel/2% TBP, 30% ethanol/70% diesel/3% TBP, and 40% ethanol/60% diesel/4% TBP. As the starting fuel, we used 100% diesel to compare the results. The engine’s output and emissions have been measured at various engine loads and constant speeds of 1500 rpm. According to the data gathered, even when the percentage of ethanol was increased to 40%, neither the base fuel nor the engine BTE changed significantly. The engine exhaust gas temperature was found to decrease slightly when the proportion of ethanol was increased. When bioethanol is increased to 40% of the base volume, it causes an increase in the combustion of unburned hydrocarbons and CO emissions. However, when the percentage of ethanol was increased from 100% diesel to the base fuel to 40%, CO2 emissions decreased, and O2 emissions slightly increased.
