Quasi-2D Gas of Laser Cooled Atoms in a Planar Matter Waveguide

Abstract: We prepare a quasi-2D gas of argon atoms confined in a planar matter waveguide in close vicinity (,1 mm) of a reflecting surface. The (anti-)nodes of a far off resonant standing light wave in front of the surface provide a confining potential for the atomic motion normal to the surface. A cloud of cold atoms that approaches the surface is compressed by deceleration in an evanescent field and loaded predominantly into one single potential well close to the surface by optical pumping. The spatial density achieve… Show more

“…We are considering n as a free parameter that can be set to two or three depending on the dimensionality of the problem considered. BEC systems are in general three dimensional; however, in certain situations a two dimensional condensate can be considered a good theoretical model [31] and is easier to compare with numerical simulations of Eq. (1).…”

“…Although Bose-Einstein condensation problems are usually three dimensional, this model can be related to pancake type traps, and to recent experiments with quasi two-dimensional condensates or coherent atomic systems [8,9]. The model (2) is also known in nonlinear Optics where it is used to study the propagation of paraxial beams in fibers with a (modulated) parabolic profile of the refraction index.…”

“…Another approach to the surface light traps, which was developed in parallel to evanescent wave traps, is based on standing light waves [17]. Recently an integrated atom-optical circuit, which combines cooling of atoms in a surface magneto-optical trap and their subsequent transportation along the waveguide formed by a standing light wave, has been demonstrated [18].…”
