Quartz Sand Filter Media with Special Wettability for Continuous and Efficient Oil/Water Separation and Dye Adsorption

Abstract: For continuous and efficient oil/water separation and adsorption of dyes, coconut shell powder was grafted onto the surface of quartz sand by dip-coating method to make coconut shell powder-covered quartz sand filter media (CSQS) with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties and superoleophilic and underoil highly hydrophobic properties. The contact angles of the underwater oil and underoil water with CSQS were more than 151.2° and 134.2°, respectively. A continuous oil/water separation devic… Show more

“…An SHL−UWSOB pine nut shell‐coated membrane has been fabricated, and the separation of various O/W emulsions and the adsorption performance for dyes and heavy metal ions were achieved. [ 159 ] The SHL−UWSOB layer was developed from waste potato peels by one‐step NaClO 2 treatment, which can simultaneously remove MB and rhodamine B during the oil–water separation process. [ 160 ] The walnut shell SHL−UWSOB powders (WSPs) with low adhesion to oils were highly efficient to purify oily and dye pollutants in sewage.…”

“…The permeability coefficient is linked to the type, viscosity, and density of oil [39]. Figure S5 exhibits the permeability coefficient of oil and water, which was used to measure the separation speed.…”
