Quark flavor physics and lattice QCD

Abstract: For a long time, investigation into the weak interactions of quarks has guided us toward understanding the Standard Model we know today. Now in the era of high precision, these studies are still one of the most promising avenues for peering beyond the Standard Model. This is a large-scale endeavour with many tales and many protagonists. In these pages I follow a few threads of a complex story, those passing through the realm of lattice gauge theory.

“…[208,209] for recent reviews. Furthermore, one-to-two hadronic transitions induced by a local current can be determined from a corresponding lattice-QCD three-point function involving the current and hadronic states, with successful applications in constraining matrix elements of relevance to flavor physics [163,210,211]. The generalization of this formalism, known as Lellouch-Lüscher method [212], is essential in determining the nn → pp transition amplitude from lattice QCD (see Refs.…”

“…Agreement among determinations signifies the validity of the Standard Model (for these processes, at this level of precision), whereas discrepancies could indicate the presence of new physics. In the case of |V cb | and |V ub |, there are long-standing discrepancies between so-called inclusive determinations, which study decay rates summed over outgoing final states, and the most precise exclusive determinations from semileptonic decays [3,4,5]. This situation is summarized succinctly in Fig.…”
