Quantum Path Interference and Multiple Electron Scattering in Soft X-Ray High-Order Harmonic Generation

Abstract: High-order harmonic generation is an important mechanism to generate coherent radiation in the few-100-eV spectral range with ultrashort laser pulses. Moreover, a closer inspection of the measured spectra provides unique information about the underlying physics and allows deriving guidelines for improvements. The long-range modulation of the spectral envelope is linked to phase matching, and we will show how to improve it with a double-pulse excitation scheme. Additionally, the spectrum contains only every fou… Show more

“…HHG is very flexible and able to fulfill the demand of different applications, viz. it can generate very short pulses with durations even of attoseconds [1,2], or very high harmonics with energies of few keV [3][4][5][6] for time resolved spectroscopy [7,8].…”

“…XPA was experimentally demonstrated in Ar gas at around 40 eV photon energies [1, 3] and explained theoretically [4]. In He gas, the process was experimentally observed from around 100 eV [5] to photon energies up to keV [6,7], which was supported by numerical studies [8,9,10]. The underlying process has been theoretically described from several different viewpoints; classical, semi-classical and quantum mechanical.…”

“…In both cases, complex behaviors were observed. Inspecting the beam profiles and their interference effects, the role and importance of the short and long electron trajectories and the quantum path interferences in the generation process have been resolved [10][11][12][16][17][18][19]. The spectral shift of the harmonic lines from their expected spectral position was also recognized.…”
