Quantum mechanics of a single ion in a paul trap: motion influenced by a time dependent linear force

Abstract: Abstract. Due to the time dependence of the force, the energy of the ion may differ from the Hamiltonian. This problem can be solved, however, in an appropriate gauge. The result is used to evaluate time averaged observables assuming that the laser light (used to detect and cool the ion) causes Markovian dissipation of the energy.
