Quantum efficiency of europium doped LaPO4 phosphors for UV sensing applications

Abstract: The radiation conversion phenomenon is used for UV sensing applications with rare earth doped phosphors. This paper presents the results of structural and optical measurements of undoped and europium doped LaPO4 phosphors. LaPO4 phosphors with 1% mol, 2% mol, and 5% mol of europium were fabricated by the co-precipitation method. The effect of Eu3+ concentrations on the luminescence characteristics under UV LED excitation was investigated. The maximum quantum efficiency of luminescence (c.a. 82%) was obtained i… Show more

“…Initially, samples doped with one type of rare-earth ion were produced to select optimal concentrations for co-doped samples. The optimal concentrations 5 mol% of Eu 2 O 3 , 2 mol% of Nd 2 O 3 , and 5 mol% of Yb 2 O 3 were chosen from our earlier work [ 43 ]. To synthesize the phosphors, La 2 O 3 , Eu 2 O 3 , Nd 2 O 3 , and Yb 2 O 3 (Sigma-Aldrich, 99.99%), nitric acid (V), NH 4 H 2 PO 4 (Chempur), and glycerol (Sigma-Aldrich, 99.5%) were used.…”

“…Due to the strong absorption of radiation in the 300–400 nm spectral range, triple-positive europium ions (Eu 3+ ) are characterized by easy excitation from the ground state using relatively low optical power. Upon excitation of Eu 3+ ions, the most intense emission bands are in the range from 580 to 720 nm, which is associated with the 5 D 0 → 7 F J transitions [ 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ]. However, the width of emission bands of Eu 3+ is limited from several to tens of nanometers.…”

“…[4][5][6] Recently, attention has shifted towards metal-free molecular perovskites (MFPs) like A(NH 4 )X 3 , which are not only nontoxic and environmentally friendly, but can also be prepared directly from water-based solutions. These MFPs have shown promising results in various research areas, including ferroelectrics, [7] piezoelectrics, [4,8,9] electro-optic modulators, [10] and X-ray detection. [11][12][13] While MFPs share the same general ABX 3 formula with traditional MHPs, they differ in that a divalent organic cation occupies the A site and a monovalent ammonium ion occupies the B site.…”

“…Europium ions have strong absorption at the wavelength of 395 nm, which allows UV diodes to excite it efficiently. Using europium ions as a donor shows the possibility of obtaining efficient energy transfer between europium and neodymium, and then between neodymium and ytterbium [12][13][14].…”

“…Glass ceramics were obtained after 15 minutes of heat treatment of the parent glass. Based on previous research [13,15], the co-precipitation method was chosen to fabricate LaPO₄ nanophosphors co-doped with 5% mol of Eu2O3, 5% mol Yb2O5, and 2% mol of Nd2O3. To synthesize the phosphors were used: La2O3, Eu2O3, Yb2O3, Nd2O3 (Sigma-Aldrich, 99.99%), nitric acid (V), NH4H2PO4 (Chempur), and glycerol (Sigma-Aldrich, 99.5%).…”
