Quantum cutting mechanism in NaYF_4:Tb^3+, Yb^3+

Abstract: A quantum cutting mechanism for the sublinear near-IR power dependence property in Tb3+-Yb3+ codoped NaYF4 powders were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The slopes of Yb3+ luminescence intensity versus excitation power were fitted to be between 0.5 and 1. We have developed a quantum cutting rate equation model to explain the anomalous sublinear phenomenon and an assessment factor was introduced to help understand the physical mechanism. Experimental results showed that the linear downconvers… Show more

“…According to the literature, non-linear dependence of luminescence intensity versus excitation power evidences second-order nonlinear quantum cutting process with energy transfer through a virtual energy level [32]. In turn, linear dependence in the case of t-ZrO 2 can be explained by the cooperative energy transfer process from 5 D 4 (Tb 3+ ) to Yb 3+ [32]. However, the existence of a unique energy transfer in the case of t-ZrO 2 is not irrefutable proof of the quantum cutting process.…”

“…These phenomena, so called quantum-cutting effects, has been analysed for (in) different optical systems [10][11]. However, using the mechanism of energy transfer with upconversion in RE ions is more effective approach to obtain visible laser or amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) under infrared radiation (IR) pumping.…”

“…It has to be noted that development of upconversion fiber source, entails the elaboration of thermally stable, low phonon energy host glass which meets the optical and fibre technology requirements. Tellurite glasses, thanks to a good solubility of rare earth elements (2 mol %) as well as a low phonon energy (780 cm -1 ) enable an effective conversion of IR radiation to VIS radiation and make an alternative to fluoride as well as to HMO glasses [10][11][12][13][14]. Moreover, good mechanical properties as well as high thermal stability makes it possible to form them into optical fibers.…”
