Quantum catalysis-assisted attenuation for improving free-space continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Abstract: Quantum key distribution (QKD) has reached a global scale by utilizing the powerful scheme in free space scenes with a more flexible transmission. Unfortunately, the practical applicability of free-space QKD is usually curtailed by the fact that the atmospheric turbulence unavoidably destructs the quality of the quantum signal, which limits its maximum transmission distance. Here we propose an attenuation scheme for the Gaussian modulated coherent state QKD, in which a quantum catalysis operation acts as a noi… Show more

“…Here, it is worth emphasizing that the amplitude and phase modulators are often used to directly change Alice's modulation variance [45], and such an event is deterministic. Different from these amplitude and phase modulators, the implementation of the ZPC, on the one hand, is probabilistic so that this kind of probabilistic modulation may make it difficult for Eve to steal valid information [46]. The effects of the ZPC, on the other hand, can be emulated by the Gaussian post-selection in the CVQKD system, and after Alice and Bob preserve enough data, Alice adopts the acceptance probability contributed by the ZPC to determine which data will be accepted and reveals them to Bob [47].…”

“…The attenuation coefficient g is optimal for each zenith angle. In addition, the single-photon catalysis (SPC) protocol, which can be considered as another noiseless attenuation operation [34], is also plotted for comparison. We find that the NA-based scheme improves performance.…”
