Molecular vibrations and quantum tunneling may link ligand binding to the function of pharmacological receptors. The well‐established lock‐and‐key model explains a ligand's binding and recognition by a receptor; however, a general mechanism by which receptors translate binding into activation, inactivation, or modulation remains elusive. The Vibration Theory of Olfaction was proposed in the 1930s to explain this subset of receptor‐mediated phenomena by correlating odorant molecular vibrations to smell, but a mechanism was lacking. In the 1990s, inelastic electron tunneling was proposed as a plausible mechanism for translating molecular vibration to odorant physiology. More recently, studies of ligands’ vibrational spectra and the use of deuterated ligand analogs have provided helpful information to study this admittedly controversial hypothesis in metabotropic receptors other than olfactory receptors. In the present work, based in part on published experiments from our laboratory using planarians as an experimental organism, I will present a rationale and possible experimental approach for extending this idea to ligand‐gated ion channels.

The article is devoted to algebraic modeling of universal rules of stochastic organization of genomic DNA of higher and lower organisms, previously published by the author. The proposed algebraic apparatus, which uses formalisms of quantum mechanics and quantum informatics and which is based on the so-called tensor-unitary transformations of vectors that generate families of interrelated stochastic-deterministic vectors of increased dimensions. The features of the vectors' interconnections in these families model the stochastic-deterministic properties of the named phenomenological rules. There are new approaches to modeling of developing multi-parameter biosystems, whose number of parameters increases in the course of step-by-step development. In the light of the presented materials, the issues of fractal-like organization in genetically inherited biosystems are considered. The development of the theory of stochastic determinism as an antipode of deterministic chaos is discussed.

The study of the human psyche has elucidated a bipartite structure of cognition reflecting the quantum-classical nature of any process that generates knowledge and learning governed by brain activity. Acknowledging the importance of such a finding for modelization, we posit an approach to study brain by means of the quantum-classical dynamics of a Mixed Weyl symbol. The Mixed Weyl symbol is used to describe brain processes at the microscopic level and, when averaged over an appropriate ensemble, provides a link to the results of measurements made at the mesoscopic scale. Within this approach, quantum variables (such as,for example, nuclear and electron spins, dipole momenta of particles or molecules, tunneling degrees of freedom, etc may be represented by spinors while the electromagnetic fields and phonon modes involved in the processes are treated either classically or semi-classically, by also considering quantum zero-point fluctuations. Zero-point quantum effects can be incorporated into numerical simulations by controlling the temperature of each field mode via coupling to a dedicated Nosè-Hoover chain thermostat. The temperature of each thermostat is chosen in order to reproduce quantum statistics in the canonical ensemble. In this first paper, we introduce a quantum-classical model of brain dynamics, clarifying its mathematical strucure and focusing the discussion on its predictive value. Analytical consequences of the model are not reported in this paper, since they are left for future work. Our treatment incorporates compatible features of three well-known quantum approaches to brain dynamics - namely the electromagnetic field theory approach, the orchestrated objective reduction theory, and the dissipative quantum model of the brain - and hints at convincing arguments that sustain the existence of quantum-classical processes in the brain activity. All three models are reviewed.
