Quantitative Trait Loci for Health Traits in Finnish Ayrshire Cattle

Abstract: A whole-genome scan was conducted to search for quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting health traits in Finnish Ayrshire dairy cattle. The mapping population consisted of 12 bulls and their 491 sons in a granddaughter design. A total of 150 markers were typed covering all 29 autosomes. The traits under study were somatic cell score, mastitis, and a group of other veterinary treatments. Effects of the QTL and positions were estimated with the regression method. When carrying out interval mapping on each chromo… Show more

“…Schrooten et al [56] detected QTL for SCS on BTA18 in Dutch Holsteins. Schulman et al [57] identified a QTL for both SCS and mastitis on the distal end of BTA18 in Finnish cattle. The same QTL was also detected in German cattle [8,37].…”

“…The mastitis QTL on BTA6 is in the region of the QTL for milk production, and this may partially account for the unfavorable genetic correlation between high milk production and increased susceptibility of mastitis. Schulman et al [57] reported QTL for mastitis on BTA14 and BTA18 in Finnish Ayrshire cattle. The distal end of BTA18 showed linkage both for SCS and mastitis.…”

“…Therefore, the use of genetic markers to indicate resistance or susceptibility to mastitis or to better exploit the phenotypic information through genomic selection (GS) is an attractive proposition (Goddard and Hayes, 2007). At present, however, the available literature on GS and molecular markers for mastitis resistance mainly refer to dairy cattle (Klungland et al, 2001;Boichard et al, 2003;Schulman et al, 2004). In sheep, quantitative trait loci (QTL) influencing SCS have recently been detected (Rupp et al, 2003b;Gutierrez-Gil et al, 2007;Raadsma et al, 2009).…”

“…GWAS studies on bovine mastitis-related traits have also reported QTL affecting susceptibility to mastitis on chromosome 14 (Schulman et al, 2004;Lund et al, 2007;Tiezzi et al, 2015) by using different populations and experimental plans.…”
