Quantitative multivoxel 1H MR spectroscopy of the brain in children with acute liver failure

Abstract: Acute liver failure (ALF)-related encephalopathy was previously characterized by MR spectroscopy of single voxels containing both grey and white matter brain tissue. Quantitative multivoxel MRS was used here to compare grey and white matter brain tissue concentrations of glutamate/glutamine (Glx) and lactate in ALF and associate the results with other liver function parameters. Five pediatric patients with ALF-related encephalopathy and five controls, examined after successful liver transplantation, were exami… Show more

“…Though the direction of the relationships differed across regions, Glx tended to be negatively associated with cortical volume and positively associated with ventricular volume. These findings are consistent with previously reported associations between increased Glx and brain damage caused by chronic and acute hepatic encephalopathy, hypoxia, near drowning, and ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (Binesh et al , 2006; Gropman and Batshaw, 2004; Kreis et al , 1996; Long et al , 2009; Sijens et al , 2008). Findings for other brain disorders have been mixed with regards to the direction of Glx effects.…”

“…An increase in the glutamine/glutamate peak with a decrease in the myo-inositol and choline peaks can be detected on MR spectroscopy [54,55]. This increase of glutamine/ glutamate may be related to hepatic encephalopathy [56].…”
