Quantitative MR in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis

Abstract: In patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), the apparently uninvolved cerebral white matter between demyelinated plaques may have biochemical abnormalities. To what degree the changes in the white matter contribute to symptomatology in MS is unknown. In 39 patients with multiple sclerosis, and in 39 age-matched nondiseased volunteers, T1 and T2 were calculated from spin-echo images in four regions of apparently uninvolved white matter. In three of four white matter areas, the average T1 and T2 were significantly… Show more

“…In the group of seven MS patients in which serial observations were obtained, MTR histograms showed a decrease in peak height over an average time of 25 months. Although these results are preliminary, and obtained in a small series of patients, the finding is statistically significant.…”

“…Haughton et al (44) found significantly longer Tl and T,, which also correlated with the severity of the disease, in apparently uninvolved white matter of patients with MS compared with healthy controls. A multiecho MRI sequence without contrast agent was used.…”
