Quantitative heel ultrasound in a population-based study in Italy and its relationship with fracture history: the ESOPO study

Abstract: We assessed the clinical usefulness of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) in defining the prevalence rates of osteoporosis and osteopenia and their association with fractures of the forearm, vertebrae, and hip. The ESOPO study was conducted in 2001 and assessed a random sample of 11,011 women and 4,981 men, in 83 centers spread all over Italy. A large array of risk factors was investigated, and self-reported history of fractures was collected in a questionnaire. After the patient had undergone interview and a brief… Show more

“…In Italy, according to the epidemiological study ESOPO (Epidemiological Study On the Prevalence of Osteoporosis), the prevalence of osteoporosis is 22.8 and 42.3% in women aged between 40 and 79-year old and 14.5 and 34.3% in men aged between 60 and 79-year-old, respectively. It has been observed a significant association between osteoporosis and history of fractures in both sexes (5). It has been estimated that today about 3.5 millions of women and 1 million of men are affected by osteoporosis in Italy.…”

“…According to the ESOPO study (Epidemiological Study On the Prevalence Osteoporosis in Italy), about 5 million Italians suffer from osteoporosis, with almost 1.5 million of these subjects being "at high risk" of femoral fracture because they have already experienced one or more vertebral fractures (4). Hospital costs offemoral fractures in the elderly Italian population account for 1 billion Euros per year (5).…”

“…The apparatus for heel evaluation measures both broadband ultrasound attenuation and the speed of sound, both of which are used to calculate an index of bone stiffness (SI) which is a reflection of BMD. Values on this index were classified as follows: Indicative of osteoporosis if SI ≤ 65%, indicative of osteopenia if 65% ≤ SI ≤ 86% and indicative of normal if SI > 86% (34).…”
