Quantitative electroencephalography interpretation of human brain activity after COVID-19 before and after Sudarshan Kriya Yoga

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the entire world. The SARS-CoV-2 virus is wreaking havoc globally, leading to serious health problems and even death. The purpose of this study is to present the brainwave variability pattern using QEEG after exposure to COVID-19 and to introduce the subject of the Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY)-based breathing technique. QEEG is one of the basic neurological examinations through which we can compare the changes in the nervous system after SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and observe t… Show more

“…In our patients, the wave-related values exceeded the reference levels and were significantly higher than the values documented in the control group. An elevated beta2-wave state is perceived as unfavorable as it is associated with high emotional tension [ 55 ]. The resulting increased beta2 waves in both hemispheres indicate increased levels of stress and emotional tension, which was the case in our patients.…”

“…Creative thinking is also associated with theta rhythm [ 35 ]. The high amplitude of theta waves can also be associated with various emotional states, such as severe nervousness and disquietude, which can lead to feeling distracted and attention problems [ 55 , 65 , 66 ]. The elevated theta waves observed in our patients also confirm the symptoms reported by pilots who reported experiencing symptoms of attentional distraction, concentration difficulties, and anxiety during flight.…”

“…The technique was taught to 15 individuals 2-months post-COVID by trained professionals from the Art of Living (AOL); a non-profit organization. Pre-(day-1) and post-(day-3) the "SKY course", brainwaves (delta, theta, alpha, SMR, beta1, and beta2 waves) were captured from the central (Cz, C3, and C4), frontal (Fz, F3, and F4), and parietal (P3, [119]. Figure 2d presents the results of a "case study on the potential of QEEG and Neurofeedback for assessment and treatment of panic attacks (PA)" [120].…”

“…Evidence suggests Meditation and yoga breathing practices as effective tools in reducing anxiety and post-traumatic stress (68)(69)(70). Patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) benefit from yoga-based practices in terms of emotional and physical resilience, stress, and energy (71)(72)(73)(74)(75)(76)(77)(78).…”
