Quantitative EEG in Schizophrenic Patients before and during Pharmacotherapy

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the possible differences in quantitative EEG parameters of schizophrenic patients before and during therapy with neuroleptics. First EEG recordings were obtained from schizophrenic patients (n = 50) who had not been taking any medicaments during the preceding 2 months. Second EEG recordings were obtained during the administration of neuroleptic therapy. Amplitude values of particular spectral segment, i.e. delta, theta, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1 and beta 2 (after fast Fouri… Show more

“…Altered theta activity in schizophrenia has been documented irrespective of medication and duration of illness (Begic, Hotujac, & Jokic-Begic, 2000;Boutros, et al, 2008;Fehr et al, 2001). Medication with atypical neuroleptics (as predominatly administred in this patients group) may even lead to normalisation of the observed theta response (Czobor & Volavka, 1993).…”

“…Delta power is shown to decrease with initiation of pharmacotherapy. 63 Further, lower delta power has been shown to be associated with better treatment response. 56 The results of our study which link higher delta power with negative symptoms may suggest an expected poorer treatment response in such patients.…”

“…Similarly, clozapine treatment led to a background slowing (i.e., shift towards lower frequencies) in the theta range, and often also in the delta range [Malow et al, 1994]. In fact, what seems to be a common feature of neuroleptic drugs is a reduction of spectral activity in the slow frequencies and an increase of spectral activity in the alpha frequencies [Begic et al, 2000b].…”
