Quantitative Characterization of Full-Spectrum Pore Size and Connectivity for Shale with Different Sedimentary Facies from the Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, East China

Abstract: Working with shales in the fourth member of Shahejie Formation in the Dongying Depression in Bohai Bay Basin of East China, this study examines the facies classification, petrological characteristics, pore size distribution, and pore connectivity of oil-producing shale. The studied shales could be classified into five sedimentary facies according to a three-step classification criterion that consists of total organic carbon (TOC), sedimentary structure, and mineral composition. Among them, the “low TOC massive… Show more

“…Shale oil is a significant unconventional energy and attracts widespread attention, which can offset the shortage of conventional resources. There are still some key problems that influence the highly efficient production of shale oil, such as accurate characterization of the pore structure and oil distribution among pore space. Pore structure characterization is a basic but important aspect of the shale oil reservoir, which is different from conventional and shale gas reservoirs. The rock from conventional oil reservoirs mainly consists of micropores and millimeter pores, and nanopores can be neglected.…”
