Quantitative and textural analysis of magnetization transfer and diffusion images in the early detection of brain metastases

Abstract: PurposeThe sensitivity of the magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for early detection of brain metastases was investigated in mice and humans.MethodsMice underwent MRI twice weekly for up to 31 d following intracardiac injection of the brain‐homing breast cancer cell line MDA‐MB231‐BR. Patients with small cell lung cancer underwent quarterly MRI for 1 year. MTR and ADC were measured in regions of metastasis and matched contralateral tissue at the final time point and in … Show more

“…No additional article was identified after searching the bibliographies of these articles. After full-text reviews of the 21 provisionally eligible articles, nine articles were excluded because they were not in the field of interest, 31–37 contained potentially overlapping data, 38 or contained insufficient information in terms of detectability of machine learning using MRI data for patients with BM. 39 Finally, 12 articles were included in the present systematic review and meta-analysis.…”

“…Ainsworth et al (93) measured magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) and ADC in a mouse model of brain metastases twice a week for 31 days after intracardiac injection of brain-homing breast cancer cell line MDA-MB231-BR. The tumors showed significantly lower MTR and ADC values compared to contralateral normal appearing brain tissue.…”

“…If detection and treatment of small, asymptomatic lesions is to be considered, we also need diagnostic tools with precision and specificity that exceed the standard achievable with diagnostic MRI. With significant research efforts being directed towards the application of machine learning methods in image analysis [81,82], it is becoming possible to correlate more subtle image parameters with the development of brain metastases [83,84]. However, simultaneous acquisition of positron-emission tomography (PET)-based tumor biomarker information will likely be required to achieve the specificity and sensitivity required for clinical implementation as a surveillance modality.…”
