Fusarium equiseti is prevalent in ginseng soil, straw mulch and in ginseng root tissues and is the cause of a root surface discolouration on ginseng grown in British Columbia. Population levels of the fungus in ginseng fields ranged from 3.8×10 3 cfu g −1 soil to 1.4×10 4 cfu g −1 soil and were highest at 0-5 cm soil depths compared to 10-15 cm. Soil population levels were negatively correlated with S content in soil and positively correlated with Zn levels. Barley or wheat straw added to soil significantly increased population levels under laboratory conditions. Mycelial growth in culture was highest at 26-30°C and at pH 7.2-7.8. Samples of flowers and berries, and harvested seed, contained DNA of F. equiseti detected using a Fusarium-specific DNA array and the fungus was isolated from these tissues on agar medium. A high degree of genetic variation in the EF-1 alpha gene sequence was present among 52 isolates of F. equiseti which originated from ginseng fields. At least seven clades were identified. Inoculum dispersal from straw mulch used in ginseng gardens can result in seed contamination by the fungus. In addition, fungal growth near the soil surface under warm summer conditions can result in infection and crown discolouration of ginseng roots.

There are several taxonomic systems available for identifying Fusarium species. The philosophy used in each taxonomic system is discussed as well as problems encountered in working with Fusarium species in culture. Fusarium species are toxigenic, and the mycotoxins produced by these organisms are often associated with animal and human diseases. The implications for the association of the carcinogens, fumonisins, produced by Fusarium moniliforme and other Fusarium species with human diseases are discussed. Foreign-body-associated fusarial infection such as keratitis in contact lens wearers, onychomycosis, skin infections, and disseminated multiorgan infections are discussed. Disseminated fusarial hyalohyphomycosis has emerged as a significant, usually fatal infection in the immunocompromised host. Successful outcome is determined by the degree of immunosuppression, the extent of the infection, and the presence of a removable focus such as an indwelling central venous catheter. These infections may be clinically suspected on the basis of a constellation of clinical and laboratory findings, which should lead to prompt therapy, probably with one of the newer antifungal agents. Perhaps the use of such agents or the use of colony-stimulating factors may improve the outcome of this devastating infection. However, until new approaches for treatment develop, effective preventive measures are urgently needed.

A total of 110 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum were collected from apparently healthy celery roots from the major celery production areas of California. All isolates used in this study were nonpathogenic on celery. Nitrate-nonutilizing mutants (nit mutants) were used to test for vegetative compatibility among the isolates. Twenty-eight isolates were randomly selected from the collection and used as tester isolates. Complementary nit mutants, arbitrarily designated nitA and nitB, were recovered from each of the 28 tester isolates and paired in all combinations to test for vegetative compatibility among the isolates. Fourteen distinct vegetative compatibility groups, designated VCG2001 through VCG2014, were recovered. The remaining 82 isolates were then tested for vegetative compatibility with these 14 vegetative compatibility groups. Fifty of the 110 isolates belong to one of the 14 vegetative compatibility groups. Two vegetative compatibility groups, VCG2001 and VCG2002, were found in the highest frequency and from the most fields. The data suggest that some vegetative compatibility groups found colonizing celery roots may be much more common than others. Vegetative compatibility may be a way to identify and characterize strains of nonpathogenic F. oxysporum.
