Quantitative Analysis of Various B-ring Unsubstituted and Substituted Flavonoids in Ten Australian Species of Eucalyptus

Abstract: Flavonoids (in particular unsubstituted B ring flavanones) in Eucalyptus foliage play an important role in mediating animal plant interactions, and there is a need for methods to analyse the diverse profiles found in leaves. A simple, high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method with in-line connected photodiode-array (PDA) detection was developed and validated to identify and quantify nine Bring unsubstituted and three Bring substituted flavonoids in ten Australian species of Eucalyptus. Of these, ei… Show more

“…This fragment ion further lost deoxyhexose to form the base peak [M−H−C 10 H 14 O 2 −C 6 H 10 O 4 ] − at m / z 301 (quercetin). Combining the fragmentation pattern of the compound with literature data [ 15 , 16 ], it was inferred that the compound was Eucalmaidin D/cypellogin A/B, and its fragmentation pattern is shown in Figure 6 .…”

“…Based on the above information and literature [14], it was inferred that compound 13 is Sideroxylonal A/B/C, and its fragmentation pattern is shown in Figure 5a. Combining the fragmentation pattern of the compound with literature data [15,16], it was inferred that the compound was Eucalmaidin D/cypellogin A/B, and its fragmentation pattern is shown in Figure 6.…”

“…No reports are available on the antioxidant activity of E. rossii , nor E. cupressiformis , as far as the authors are aware. Similarly, there is limited literature on the phytochemistry of these species—Saraf et al [ 14 ] reported four flavonoids in E. rossii , and Cook and Haynes [ 15 ] reported four flavonoid glycosides in E. cupressiformis .…”

“…Brushtail possums were offered a formulated diet with or without the PSM, flavanone. Flavanone is a representative of the unsubstituted B-ring flavanone (UBF) class of PSMs present in the foliage of many eucalypt species (Saraf et al, 2017;Marsh et al, 2019), and is known to deter brushtail possums from feeding (Marsh et al, 2015). One week before feeding experiments to reduce any effects of novelty, brushtail possums were offered the basal diet containing 0.625% DM flavanone (Sigma-Aldrich, Sydney, NSW, Australia) on one night, and 1.25% DM flavanone the next night.…”
