Quantitative analysis of substance P, neurokinin A and calcitonin gene‐related peptide in gingival crevicular fluid associated with painful human teeth

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of substance P (SP), neurokinin A (NKA) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the gingival crevicular fluid of teeth diagnosed with pain of pulpal origin compared with clinically healthy teeth, and to detect any changes in the levels of these neuropeptides in gingival crevicular fluid after removal of the pulp from the painful teeth. Gingival crevicular fluid was collected at baseline from one interproximal site at a painful and a non-painful contra… Show more

“…Moreover, recent work in our laboratory indicates that increased tachykinin levels in painful human dental pulp are associated with increased tachykinin levels in the GCF of painful and adjacent teeth (Awawdeh et al, 2002b). It is possible that the increased levels of pulpal tachykinins are mirrored by an increase in activity of fibers in the periodontium, leading to higher concentrations of neuropeptides in GCF.…”

“…This process can release inflammatory mediators from the peripheral nerve terminals, and is thus called 'axon reflex-mediated neurogenic inflammation' (Holzer, 1988). Interestingly, such neurogenic mechanisms may be responsible not only for pulpal-pain-induced blood flow elevations in gingiva (Kemppainen et al, 2003), but also for neuropeptide level elevations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) (Awawdeh et al, 2002a).…”
