Quantitative analysis of povidone-iodine thin films by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and their physicochemical properties

Abstract: In this study, povidone-iodine (PVP-I) has been formulated as a topical spray to produce a thin film for the controlled release of I 2 . By means of experimental design, 27 formulations containing glycerol, ethanol, PEG 400, copovidone and HFA 134a as a propellant were prepared. The pH values of all formulations were in the range of 6-7. The viscosity was within the range of 11.9-85.9 mPa s. The surface tensions were 20.3 to 24.6 mN m -1 and the contact angles were between 19.3 and 38.7°. The assays for the io… Show more

“…We observed the same trend using PVPI. The MIC was 12,500 mg·L −1 (1:8 dilution factor), higher than the values found in previous studies [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. However, although the values obtained were high, their dilution ratios were low, varying between 0.04% and 5% (1:2 to 1:250 dilution factor) [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ].…”

Moreover, we noted no difference in the MIC values of the other antiseptics compared with previous studies, suggesting that the BHI medium was not solely responsible for the results obtained with the two first antiseptics.…”

“…There are a variety of possibilities that could explain the dichotomy between the in vitro and in vivo efficacy. Povidone-iodine has a viscosity as high as 85.9 cP, which is similar to the value seen for olive oil (33). In contrast, fluoroquinolones have such low viscosity at baseline that methylcellulose needs to be added in to allow it to be easily administered from a dropper (34).…”

“…100 µL as a sample volume and that passes through the measuring cell (A and B) to quench of povidone iodine molecule is shown in Scheme 1. Shows a proposed expected mechanism for the reaction of atenolol with povidone iodine [37][38][39].…”
