Quantitative Analysis of Human Error Probability in High-Speed Railway Dispatching Tasks

Abstract: Human error can be regarded as a significant factor contributing to high-speed railway accidents. Cognitive Reliability and Error Analysis Method (CREAM) is well-known approach applied to determine Human Error Probability (HEP). However, shortcomings are still disclosed and weaken the applicability of such approach. These include the lack of sufficient failure data, lack of valid description of Common Performance Condition (CPC) and does not consider the CPCs weights. In addition, Basic CREAM does not provide … Show more

“…As the nerve centre of the railway transportation system, the high-speed railway train dispatching system is an important barrier for the safe, efficient and punctual operation of high-speed trains [1] . Its reliability is directly related to the safety of the entire high-speed railway transportation system.…”

“…With the continuous development of China's economy, High-speed railway (HSR) has become the main body of inter-regional rapid transportation in the comprehensive transportation system (Song, Gao, Li, Liu, & Dong, 2023). The HSR dispatching system is the brain and nerve center of the HSR transportation system and plays a huge role in ensuring the safety, punctuality, and efficient operation of HSR trains (Sun, Zhang, Yuan, Gao, & Ding, 2020). With the continuous advancement of science and technology, China HSR dispatching system is based on the Centralized Traffic Control (CTC), realizing the automation and remote control of dispatching and command centered on train operation plan control.…”

“…Previous studies have focused on HSR drivers [3]; however, dispatchers also play an important role in ensuring the safety and punctuality of HSR transportation especially in emergency situations [4]. Analysis has identified that errors made by dispatchers can be regarded as a significant predictive factor contributing to HSR accidents, which could lead to catastrophic consequences [5]. In 2011, on the Yong-Wen line operated by China State Railway Group, two trains had a rear-end collision, which resulted in 40 deaths and 172 injuries.…”
