In the temperate grasslands of northern China, there exists a large range of soil texture. However, previous studies have mainly focused on the effect of climate water deficit on plant traits and have paid little attention to the effect of soil water deficit because grasses tend to use rainfall water directly. We measured eight droughtrelated plant traits of 12 widely distributed perennial species in the temperate grassland in northern China and examined drought-related plant traits under different aridity index ([ET 0 − P]/ET 0 ) and soil sand/clay ratio. The 12 species were categorized into three functional groups: fibrous-rooted C 4 species, fibrous-rooted C 3 species, and tap-rooted C 3 species. Our results showed that increasing climate drought had influence on all selected functional groups, and the influence on aboveground biomass and height was especially large on fibrous-rooted C 3 species. Coarse soil led to increased root length of fibrous-rooted C 3 and tap-rooted C 3 species. Our results imply that root system can be important to plant responses under drought, and soil texture can have influence on plant, though most of the traits show resistance to coarser soil.

Wind erosion is crucial for assessing regional ecosystem services and sustainable development. The Agro-Pastoral Ecotone of northern China (APEC) is a typical region undergoing wind erosion and soil degradation. In this study, the National Wind Erosion Survey Model of China, the Integrated Wind Erosion Modeling System, and the regional versions of the Revised Wind Erosion Equation and Wind Erosion Prediction System were used to evaluate the regional potential wind erosion of the APEC during 2000 and 2012. The results showed that the potential wind erosion predicted by National Wind Erosion Survey Model of China (NWESMC), Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ), Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS), and Integrated Wind Erosion Modeling System (IWEMS) were significantly related to the observed wind erosion collected from published literature, but the observed data were generally smaller than the predicted values. The average potential wind erosions were 12.58, 25.87, 52.63, and 58.72 t hm−2 a−1 for NWESMC, RWEQ, WEPS, and IWEMS, respectively, while the spatial pattern and temporal trend of annual potential wind erosion were similar for different wind erosion models. Wind speed, soil moisture, and vegetation coverage were the dominant factors affecting regional wind erosion estimation. These results highlight that it is necessary to comprehensively calibrate and validate the selected wind erosion models. A long-term standard wind erosion monitoring network is urgently required. This study can serve as a useful reference for improving wind erosion models.

The Agro-Pastoral Ecotone of Northern China (APEC) is a transitional area suffering from severe wind erosion. The wind data used in wind erosion modeling generally have different temporal resolutions and spatial station distributions. Previous studies have suggested that the temporal wind speed resolution influences the prediction of wind erosion events at the field scale. To date, no studies have been conducted to assess the impact of the type of wind data on regional wind erosion estimation. In this study, the Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ) and the Integrated Wind Erosion Modeling System (IWEMS) were used to evaluate the regional potential wind erosion in the Agro-Pastoral Ecotone of Northern China (APEC) during 2000 and 2012 based on four wind data type scenarios, including basic weather stations with daily wind statistics, basic weather stations with four wind speed measurements per day, reference climatological stations with daily wind statistics, and reference climatological stations with four wind speed measurements per day. The principal results reveal that the potential wind erosion estimates evaluated using the two models are closely correlated with the measured wind erosion data reported in the published literature, but the predicted values are generally lower than the observed values for the different scenarios. The magnitudes of the mean potential wind erosion ranged from 15.73 to 27.33 t ha−1 a−1 by RWEQ and changed between 61.77 and 98.54 t ha−1 a−1 by IWEMS for different scenarios. The spatial distribution and temporal trends of the annual or seasonal potential wind erosion obtained using the two models were similar for the different scenarios. This study revealed that wind speed is the most sensitive input, and hourly wind speed generated by the different temporal interpolation can significantly affect regional wind erosion estimation. Some studies involving precise regional wind erosion estimation, such as the impacts of landscape changes (land use/cover) on wind erosion, ecosystem service evaluation of reducing soil erosion, soil carbon sequestration and emissions through wind erosion, and wind erosion induced surface soil nutrient loss (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus), may have been influenced by conducting regional wind erosion modeling based on different types of wind data. The users need to calibrate and validate the selected models for precise wind erosion prediction.
