Quantifying Vertical Deformation in the Tigris–Euphrates Basin Due to the Groundwater Abstraction: Insights from GRACE and Sentinel-1 Satellites

Abstract: This study explores the occurrences of land subsidence in response to dropping groundwater levels in the central part of the Tigris-Euphrates basin. We estimated the groundwater depletion related to human and climate drivers between 2003 and 2017 based on estimates from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and two global hydrological models (NOAH-3.3 and WGHM-2.2d). The cumulative displacement was calculated using Small Baseline Subset Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SBAS-InSAR) for 96… Show more

“…Land subsidence can be a naturally driven (e.g., tectonic movements [54] and permafrost processes [55]), or a human-driven process (e.g., aquifer compaction [56][57][58][59] and hydrocarbon extraction [60,61]). Sinkholes are areas that subside naturally due to different mechanisms across many geographical locations [62,63].…”

“…Estimating groundwater levels from satellite images involves a similar paradigm to image segmentation, where the objective is to accurately delineate specific objects or regions of interest within an image. While image segmentation often focuses on classification tasks, in the context of groundwater level estimation, we perform regression analysis to predict the continuous groundwater levels [Rateb and Kuo, 2019].…”

“…Domestic and foreign experts and scholars in many fields have achieved remarkable results in inverting the change of TWS and GWS using GRACE data. These include revealing the water system changes in the Amazon and Songhua River basins [13], [14], exploring the groundwater flow trends in the land plains [15], analyzing the local hydroclimatic characteristics [16], [17], and combining radar data, such as Sentinel data, to carry out correlation studies of groundwater and surface deformation [18], [19], [20].…”
