“…Several results in our study suggest that with time on task, participants no longer engaged cognitive effort to the same extent. This assumption is consistent with models arguing that a decrease in the willingness to exert cognitive effort is associated with cognitive fatigue (Hockey, 2013 ; Massar et al, 2018 ; Müller and Apps, 2019 ).…”

“…Cognitively, the utility of using the Stroop test to measure the ability to inhibit cognitive interference has been demonstrated in clinic and research settings . Subjective fatigue has been shown to correlate with the perception of increased cognitive effort . This supports our finding that even though performance accuracy was not different between the groups, the SI score was significantly higher in the fatigued group indicating increased cognitive effort spent to maintain task performance (Figure ).…”

Mental fatigue is an often experience of healthy individuals and a permanent condition in some diseases (e.g., DeLuca, Genova, Hillary, & Wylie, 2008;Millikin, Halman, Power, & Rourke, 2003), it finds expression in subjective symptoms as well as in objectively measurable deterioration in performance (Gergelyfi, Jacob, Olivier, & Zénon, 2015).…”
