Quantifying the flexibility of residential electricity demand in 2050: a bottom-up approach

Abstract: This work presents a new method to quantify the flexibility of automatic demand response, combined with real time pricing, applied to residential electricity demand using price elasticities. A stochastic bottom-up model of flexible electricity demand in 2050 is presented. Three types of flexible devices are implemented: electric heating, electric vehicles and wet appliances. Each house schedules its flexible demand w.r.t. a varying price signal, in order to minimize its electricity cost. Own-and cross-price el… Show more

“…The scanning absorptometer measurement, performed with a KM500win Automatic Scanning Absorptometer instrument from KRK Kumagai (Japan), provides quantitative information about the liquid absorption as a function of time on time scales of 10 ms up to 10 s. 12,17 During an SA measurement, liquid is supplied from a scanning head which moves along a spiral path on the paper. In Fig.…”

“…The wetting parameter here is a calculated contact angle, computed from the measured liquid penetration using the Lucas-Washburn equation. [17][18][19] For liquid penetration ultrasonic measurement is available in different congurations. All of them indicate the liquid penetration into paper and the wetting behaviour using ultrasound intensity.…”

“…A number of approaches has been researched previously with various levels of lower level information. The available flexible capacity of a residential VPP was estimated using lower level device specifications (white box technique) to enable efficient and reliable aggregator services [6]. This technique was applied to a distributed control system with a low error of 5% for homogeneous and heterogeneous clusters.…”

“…The DR-based methods are often tailored to the underlying DR scheme (i.e., price-based or incentive-based DR) and their main objective is to model the responsiveness of customers to price signals or incentive programs. In pricebased DR schemes, an elasticity matrix models customer flexibility as changes in aggregated demand in response to price changes [11,12,13,14]. However, an elasticity matrix can only measure the aggregated flexibility potential and not the appliance specific flexibility.…”
