Quantifying the Coupling and Degeneracy of OAM Modes in High-Index-Contrast Ring Core Fiber

Abstract: We study orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode coupling in ring-core fibers (RCFs) due to elliptical shape deformation. We introduce a coupling model based on numerical mode solver outputs of perturbation. We show improved predictions in calculating coupling strength compared to the classical modeling approach. Our model captures and quantifies the disparate behaviors of coupling in lower and higher order degenerate OAM modes. The ideal orthogonality of modes is undermined by fiber imperfections. Our model predi… Show more

“…Based on this theory, the coupling between OAM modes supported by the HEl+1 and EHl-1 modes has been investigated, which is of great significance. Mai Banawan et al proposed a coupling model based on numerical mode solver outputs of perturbation to quantify the coupling and degeneracy of OAM modes in OAM fibers [27]. However, the coupling between two OAM modes composed of the same vector modes has still not been analyzed, and the two types of coupling in the same OAM mode group cannot be simultaneously fully considered.…”

“…Here, we numerically investigate the OAM mode purity in the designed air-core fiber at the wavelength of 1550 nm, which is an important indicator to measure the stability of the supported OAM modes. The transverse components of the OAM modes in the cylindrical coordinates (r, ) can be written as [28], [43], [44], ± , ± = + ( ) ±̂± ± + ( ) ± ( + )̂∓ (3a)…”

“…Experimentally, the transmission of two OAM mode-group is demonstrated over a 50 km ring core fiber without the use of MIMO DSP [63]. Emerging papers considering the design of RCFs and the propagation demonstration of OAM modes through it that we should mentions [64,65].…”
