Creep Deformation in Vaca Muerta Shale From Nanoindentation to Triaxial Experiments

We tested samples cored from the Vaca Muerta shale reservoir using nanoindentation (2 min) and triaxial (12 hr) creep experiments in which confining pressure and differential stresses were <40 MPa. In all cases, we observed transient creep wherein strain increased as the logarithm of time. Creep was always compactional, led to increased moduli, was triggered by changes in either hydrostatic or deviatoric stress, and occurred under loads well below the failure stress. Our results are consistent with yield cap models proposed to describe shear‐enhanced compaction of sandstones and carbonates, assuming that the yield surface depends on strain rate. We compared our results to earlier studies that observed the transition from transient creep to approximately constant strain rate behavior. If short‐term creep can be quantified by a creep modulus, C, and long‐term creep, after a transition time, tc, by a linear viscosity, η, then η = Ctc. Owing to heterogeneity, the local values of Young's and creep moduli, E and C, measured during nanoindentation, varied by several orders of magnitude. Simple averaging of the indentation results overestimated E and C, as compared to their triaxial counterparts. The kinetics of log time creep, which is seen in various materials and loading circumstances, has been represented by a simple conceptual model incorporating the interplay of viscoelastic elements with widely distributed characteristic times. Thus, we argue that log time creep is an emerging phenomenon, independent of the identities of the underlying physical mechanisms.

This paper presents creep properties of cement and alkali activated fly ash (AAFA) paste and mortar determined from statistical analysis of nanoindentation data. Cement paste having 95 MPa compressive strength at 28 days was tested for comparison and validation with a conventional test. Using nanoindentation, the specific creep of the cement paste after one year was predicted as 18.32 microstrain/MPa. For AAFA samples, an experimental program was set up using Taguchi's Design of Experiment method to consider four parameters, silica fume, sand to binder ratio, liquid to solid ratio, and superplasticiser, each with three variations.Using ANOVA, the percentage contributions of these parameters on the creep modulus of AAFA samples are: silica fume 26%, sand to binder ratio 21%, liquid to solid ratio 22%, and superplasticiser 31%. The results using deconvolution technique to identify the creep modulus of different phases of AAFA matrices show that partly-activated, non-activated slag and non-activated compact glass phases are leading the creep behaviour of AAFA samples due to their high creep modulus. Compare to other parameters, the liquid to solid ratio contributes the most to the creep property of partly-activated slag, non-activated slag and non-activated compact glass phases, that is, 51%, materials are such as blended cement, alkali-activated pozzolan cement, and Geopolymer. This paper presents the creep properties of some of these materials and how different compositions in the mixtures are affecting their creep properties. Concrete creeps, and this creep must be well characterized and modeled to properly design civil engineering infrastructures. Here, we present some results on the creep properties of cementitious materials obtained by using the indentation technique. Firstly, we show that minutes-long microindentations on cement paste yield a quantitative measurement of their long-term logarithmic creep kinetics, which can be used to predict the rate of long-term creep of concrete. Then, by performing microindentations, we study the effect of relative humidity on the long-term creep properties of hydrated C 3 S samples, compacted samples made of pure C-S-H, and compacted samples made of pure CH. The last part is dedicated to a study by nanoindentation of the creep properties of C-S-H phases directly within a hydrated cement paste. We identify scaling relations independent of mix proportion and heat treatment, which we can explain by drawing a thorough analogy between the mechanical behavior of C-S-H and that of clays.
