Quantifying Extreme Precipitation Forecasting Skill in High-Resolution Models Using Spatial Patterns: A Case Study of the 2016 and 2018 Ellicott City Floods

Abstract: Recent historic floods in Ellicott City, MD, on 30 July 2016 and 27 May 2018 provide stark examples of the types of floods that are expected to become more frequent due to urbanization and climate change. Given the profound impacts associated with flood disasters, it is crucial to evaluate the capability of state-of-the-art weather models in predicting these hydrometeorological events. This study utilizes an object-based approach to evaluate short range (<12 h) hourly forecast precipitation from the High-Re… Show more

“…The combinations of input variables were designated using Gamma value (Г), standard error (SE), and V-ratio for the pan evaporation estimation model. The Gamma Test is a nonparametric approach based on the minimization of mean square error in the modeling [32][33][34]. The best input combination is determined based on the obtained minimum value of Gamma static (Г).…”

“…Image segmentation is a well-established research field that spans topics in pattern classification, segmentation, and machine learning. Future geographic research should investigate other methods for delineating objects (see section 6) since the shape of an object is sensitive to the threshold that is selected (Zick, 2020).…”

“…Outside the U.S., researchers have predominantly used CRA and SAL to evaluate precipitation forecast skill in a variety of high-resolution models (Chen et al, 2018; Gofa et al, 2018; Kann et al, 2015; Karuna Sagar et al, 2017; Lindstedt et al, 2015; Rempel et al, 2017). Researchers have also used object-based methods to investigate whether high-resolution models can capture extreme precipitation events (Gofa et al, 2018; Hitchens et al, 2011; Zick, 2020).…”
