Quantifying dyspigmentation in facial skin ageing: an explorative study

Abstract: We demonstrated age-related changes in the facial colour and dyspigmentation of fair-skinned Caucasian females. An increase in dyspigmentation was found by clinical scoring and the RBX(®) -Brown transformation-based pigmentation indices. The validity of hyper- and hypopigmentation indices and overall pigmentation intensity was supported. The RBX(®) transformation-based pigmentation indices might be applied in future studies to complement or substitute clinical evaluation.

“…22 We used the Mexameter (® Courage+Khazaka Electronic GmbH, Mobile data collector DC 3000, Germany) to assess the hyperpigmented lesions. 20,[23][24][25][26][27] The two main pigments (melanin and haemoglobin) absorb light at different spectrums. Haemoglobin absorbs light in the green area of the spectrum while melanin is known to absorb light of all wavelengths.…”

“…With exhaustive and global mapping of the 14 signs recorded at both sessions (i.e. winter, summer) four major clinical clusters were covered the following: wrinkles and skin texture (surface irregularities), pigmentation disorders [22,23], ptosis and sagging, and vascular disorders. The 12 experts assessed these 14 signs in all photographs that were resized and reframed under standard operational procedures with editing software (Photoshop version 10â).…”
