Quantifying and Reducing Posture-Dependent Distortion in Ballistocardiogram Measurements

Abstract: Ballistocardiography is a non-invasive measurement of the mechanical movement of the body caused by cardiac ejection of blood. Recent studies have demonstrated that ballistocardiogram (BCG) signals can be measured using a modified home weighing scale, and used to track changes in myocardial contractility and cardiac output. With this approach, the BCG can potentially be used both for preventive screening and for chronic disease management applications. However, for achieving high signal quality, subjects are r… Show more

“…The H-F vibrations show increased energy in the 6-12Hz band for the supine and seated positions. These results are consistent with our previous findings with healthy subjects that the changes in SCG morphology-specifically, increased higher frequency vibration modes in addition to the primary mode in the 1-5 Hz range-are more associated with body mechanics rather than physiologic changes [9]. The L-R axis signals, however, do not show increased energy in higher frequency bands.…”

“…Adaptive filters can update their filter weights automatically to fit the input noise level. Several researchers have presented contributions on the analysis of ICG using signal processing techniques (Wang et al 1995 ; Muzi et al 1985 ; Ishiguro et al 2006 ; Barros et al 1995 ; Dromer et al 2009 ; Yamamoto et al 1988 ; Javaid et al 2015 ; Sebastian et al 2011 ). In these contributions, both least mean square (LMS) and recursive least square (RLS) algorithms are used.…”

“…This is important due to the increase in BCG signal quality seen as the subject is standing upright as opposed to seating [43], which is required for reliable PTT measurements.…”
