Quantification of the scratch-healing efficiency for novel zwitterionic polymers

Abstract: In this work, we present a new strategy to engineer novel self-healing ionomers, namely, zwitterionic polymers, and a comprehensive analysis of their mechanical, viscoelastic, and scratch-healing properties. This new method enables reproducible damage of the polymer surfaces, calculation of the scratch volume through tactile profile scans, and quantification of the self-healing efficiency. Based on the results of the scratch tests and complementary rheology, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravi… Show more

“…To investigate the self‐healing abilities in a comparable manner, an established experimental setup and evaluation procedure based on tactile measurements was applied. [ 35,39 ] The healing efficiency (H eff ) could be calculated based on the volume of the initial scratch (V I ) compared to the volume after certain healing steps (V H ) (Equation ). “…[81,306] The most common technique is the use of the tensile testing to break the specimens at origin and after certain hourly healing intervals and quantify the toughness of these specimens to determine the self-healing efficiency of the polymer during the design process. [7,209] Lesser-known techniques involve using a tapered cantilever beam and calculating the K ic before and after selfhealing, [307] scratching the sample with a fixed force/depth and monitoring the depth of the scratch over time, [308,309] and even dropping or shooting a ball into the polymer sample and calculating the absorbed impact energy. [310] The self-testing efficiencies based on these mechanical tests can be fed into the training set (data) of the self-healing algorithm.…”
