Quantification of serum IgE in patients with burns

Abstract: IgE levels in the serum of individuals with burns were sequentially measured and compared to TgE levels in normal control blood donors. Following a burn., the levels of IgE protein showed a significant, although modest, increase, usually evident between days 14 and 22. In an occasional patient, the IgE levels rose by as much as five times in value during this period. Because of the complexity of the clinical situation associated with the burn patients, we cannot ascribe these elevations of IgE to the burn per … Show more

“…Kawasaki's disease [36], and Guillain-Barre Syndrome [37]. Elevated serum IgE levels have also heen observed in patients with burns [38], suggesting the possibility of an IgE elevation in association with any condition which prompts an acute phase response.…”

“…However, it is possible that heightened IgE-t responses in these situations are occurring in individuals genetically predisposed to atopy. This includes entities such as burns and hidradenitis suppurativa that do not have an apparent allergic, eczematous or autoimmune component as part of the inflammatory response [36][37][38]. Pascual hypothesized that elevated IL-10 in hidradenitis suppurativa promotes B cell differentiation to plasma cells that produce the IgE [38,39].…”

“…In humans, increased levels of serum IgE are induced by acute stressors such as burns and trauma [16, 17]. More recently, chronic caregiver stress in early childhood has been reported to upregulate IgE production in children [13].…”

“…Many studies have shown that stress can affect IgE production [3, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20]. In humans, increased levels of serum IgE are induced by acute stressors such as burns and trauma [16, 17].…”
