Quantification of santonin in eight species of Artemisia from Kazakhstan by means of HPLC-UV: Method development and validation

Abstract: Santonin, a powerful anthelmintic drug that was formely used to treat worms, is Artemisia cina's main constituent. However, due to its toxicity to humans, it is no longer in use. Kazakhstan is looking to introduce this plant as an anthelmintic drug for veterinary purposes, despite the known toxic properties of the santonin. The objective of this study was to develop a fast and specific method for the identification of santonin and its precise quantitation using HPLC-UV in order to avoid unnecessary intoxicatio… Show more

“…The HPLC analysis showed a retention time of approximately 15.2 min for afzelin, 13.4 min for quercitrin, and 11.7 min for hyperoside (Figure 2). The calibration curves were based on the method described and validated by Sakipova et al [25] and all substances showed good linearity with regression coefficients R 2 ≥ 0.99 [26]. The calibration curves were used to quantify the substances in the total extract using the CECa chromatogram at a concentration of 1250 µg/mL.…”

“…Santonin is the most abundant sesquiterpene lactone in Artemisia cina Berg ex Poljakov and was isolated from several Artemisia species [ 254 , 255 , 256 ], including some edible species such as A. absinthium , A. frigida , A. tridentata [ 34 , 255 ]. Artemisia santonicum is commonly referred to as “wormseed”, a name historically attributed to the plants’ anthelmintic (“worms”) activity [ 251 ].…”
