Quantification of phytochemicals and in vitro antioxidant activities from various parts of Euphorbia neriifolia Linn.

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of the leaf, stem, latex, and bark of Euphorbia neriifolia (EN) Linn. using the solvent extraction method with petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous extracts. Total tannin content, total saponin content, total flavonoid content, total phenol content, and total flavonol content were investigated using spectrophotometric equivalents of the standards, tannic acid, quillaja, quercetin, gallic acid… Show more

“…The IC 50 values of the extracts were 0.00017 μ g/ml and 4.617 μ g/ml for the aqueous and ethanol. A similar study carried out on Euphorbia neriifolia of the same family had an IC 50 of 76.2 ± 0.07 inhibition [ 30 ]. This could be justified by the fact that all plants belonging to the same family do not necessarily have the same mode of action.…”

“…This could be justified by the fact that all plants belonging to the same family do not necessarily have the same mode of action. Bridelia micrantha extract has the ability to donate protons that can serve as an inhibitor or scavenger of free radicals, acting as a primary [ 30 ].…”

“…Distilled water was added to the solution to make up a final volume of 10 mL. The solution was allowed to stand for 7 min before the absorbance by a spectrophotometer UV-Vis (UV VIS Spectrophotometer Labo-7809) at 700 nm [7]. The concentration of the tannin was expressed as mg/ml GAE.…”

“…The Total Saponin Content (TSC) in plant parts was estimated by modified method as explained by Jain et al [21,22] . Then the total saponin compounds content in plant extracts was calculated as Saponin Quillaja Equivalent (SQE) per 50 g of fresh mass using above equation [23] .…”
