Quantification of mechanoreceptors in the canine anterior cruciate ligament

Abstract: Ten canine anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs) were harvested while preserving their bony attachments. Specimens were stained using a modified gold chloride technique, divided into thirds, and serially sliced at 0.5 microns. The slides were viewed to count the mechanoreceptors present. The average numbers of receptors found were: proximal 67, middle 43, and distal 18 (AN-OVA: P<0.001). The statistical test (Sheffé) revealed that the proximal third contained a greater mean number of receptors (S=3.8). No signifi… Show more

“…Additionally, removal of the ligament improves examination, probing, and access to menisci. The variables against debridement include preservation of ligament mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors, avoidance of morbidity to other joint structures during debridement, and potential maintenance of some CCL function 10,30,32–35 . Our results only allow us to comment on the potential of the ligament to serve as a degradative nidus in the joint.…”

“…We examined the specimens with immunohistochemical analysis by using mouse monoclonal antibody against S-100 protein. The gold chloride and the acethylcolinesterase histochemical staining techniques were used for typing the receptors [16][17][18]. On the other hand, the gold chloride staining was found to be less efficacious for the staining of thin neuronal structures and nonspecific, and it stains vascular and other structures containing collagen and elastin [14,15].…”

“…Therefore, we investigated the morphological features and the presence of mechanoreceptors in 24 ligamentum capitis femoris biopsies obtained at open reduction in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip. Of these 24 hips, 16 were completely dislocated and eight were subluxated. The mean age was 33.8 months (range 13-52 months) at the time of surgery.…”

“…Althoughs houlder joint stability is a topic of great interest among veterinaryorthopaedists (6,(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22), untilnow there have not been anyneurohistological studies concerning the canine glenohumeralligaments. Onlyafews tudiesi nvolving mechanoreceptorsindog joints have been carriedout on the kneej oint (23,24). Therefore,t he present investigation wasu ndertaken in ordert oa scertain whetherc anine medial (MGHL)and lateral(LGHL)glenohumeral ligaments contain mechanoreceptors, and in ordertoidentify their type andlocalization in the hope of shedding lighto nt heir specificfunctions.…”
