Quantification of Critical Success Factors of Contractors in Cambodia: AHP Approach

Abstract: Project success is commonly defined as a completion of a construction project within stipulated time, estimated cost and required quality. Undoubtedly, contractor's, who is one of the influencing stakeholders for project activities, performance is critical for successful project completion. Thus, being the first work in its kind, this study evaluates the CSFs for contractors in Cambodia. The AHP approach was adopted for pairwise comparison of 22 identified critical success factors

“…Among several multi-criteria decision-making methods, the AHP approach was the most appropriate for the study objective. First, AHP is a widely used approach for the relative assessment of investigated alternatives in the literature (Liu et al, 2020;Durdyev et al, 2018a;Leal, 2020). Also, the AHP method provides a hierarchical structure, which can help respondents comprehend the whole process (Yang et al, 2013).…”

“…Any negligence leads to delays (Ashley and Bonner, 1987; Anwar et al , 2018; Ashworth and Perera, 2018; Bhardwaj, 2018). Furthermore, it is essential to get environmental clearances as not having them can also lead to a halt in the execution of a project (Chin and Hamid, 2015; Durdyev et al , 2018; Montes, 2018; Naji and Ali, 2018). Sometimes the political situation of the country is a determinant for the smooth execution of construction activities (Zou et al , 2007; Cui and Gu, 2018; He and Lu, 2018; Nguyen et al , 2018; Ogungbile et al , 2018; Zarei et al , 2018).…”

“…Kaming et al (1997) reported design changes as one of the most significant causes of COs in the high-rise projects in Indonesia and concluded that these changes inevitably cause variation in the project's original cost. It was also reported that any modification(s) made in the design depends on the phase of the construction, causes significant losses in the project's productivity performance (Durdyev et al, 2018a). As an innovative approach, integrated project delivery (IPD), which encourages collaborative decisions made by the key stakeholders at the earliest stages of the project design , has been recommended to avoid/minimize design changes at the construction phase of the project (Malin, 2015); hence, to improve the project schedule performance (Kibert, 2016) and preserve project budget (Malin, 2015).…”

“…It is of utmost importance to establish a plan, which is explicitly operational and considers possible obstacles throughout the broken down project milestones. Thus, it has been seen to be critical to the probable project success (Durdyev et al, 2018a). On the other hand, any poorly planned project will face various consequences, such as project delays , poor cost performance (Alinaitwe et al, 2013) and productivity issues (Durdyev et al, 2018b).…”
