Quantification of Contrast Recognizability during Brilliant Blue G– and Indocyanine Green–Assisted Chromovitrectomy

Abstract: As an adjunct to chromovitrectomy to stain the ILM, BBG yields a significantly less well discernible contrast to the human eye than that of ICG under the premises of this study.

“…19,27,28 However, while BBG also selectively stains the ILM, 27 staining intensity has been reported to be significantly inferior to that of ICG. 14,19 • After its recent Food and Drug Administration's approval, TB is now also approved for intravitreal use in both Europe and the United States. Trypan blue had been used for staining of the anterior capsule in cataract surgery for over a decade before.…”

“…14 Frames displaying good image quality were selected, and regions of interest (ROIs) representing maximum contrast were signaled within the temporal vascular arcades under the supervision of a vitreoretinal surgeon (P.B.H.). For classification of ERM versus ILM, all videos were reviewed with the surgeon.…”

“…It has been shown that a significant proportion of the toxicity is related to the light-absorbing properties of the dye and the corresponding generating light source. Thus, it is advisable to minimize the light intensity and maximize the working distance when using vital dyes, to limit possible phototoxicity [7]. Even the photodynamic properties of ICG, BBG and TB have been evaluated in vitro.…”

“…[9][10][11] On the other hand, randomized clinical studies providing evidence that clinical outcomes are better with BBG than with ICG in ILM-peeling procedures are still lacking. Importantly, the staining properties of ICG seem superior to those of BBG 12 -a possible reason for the former's continued widespread use.…”
