Quantification of Cerebral Ventricular Volume in English Bulldogs

Abstract: Quantitative measurement of cerebral ventricle volume of eight English bulldogs was performed using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The mean ventricular volume was 14.8 ml. with a range of 8.6 ml.-38.1 ml. The mean ventricular volume of two beagles was 2.2 ml with a range of 0.7 ml.-3.7 ml. The percent of intracranial volume occupied by ventricle was found to be significantly larger in bulldogs (14.0%; S.D. = 7.9%) than in beagles (Range = 1.0-4.8%). The relationship between the percent of intracranial volume… Show more

“…Increased ventricular volume is a hallmark of aging in human MRI studies (Condon et al, 1988;Sullivan et al, 2002). Two previous in vivo studies in aging dogs reported increased total ventricular volume with age (Vite et al, 1997;Su et al, 1998), a finding later confirmed in vitro (González-Soriano et al, 2001). Dilation of the anterior portion of the lateral ventricle may represent a hallmark of advanced age in the dog, but it is unclear from the present study whether the degree of dilation is any greater than the total dilation of ventricles in old dogs.…”

“…CSF volumetric techniques using CT or MRI have been reported in dogs (Daniel et al, 1995;Vite et al, 1997). However, to the best of our knowledge, a link between CSF production and ventricular volume has not been established in dogs.…”

“…Diversos autores substituíram métodos invasivos pelo uso da imagem para diagnosticar anormalidades neurológicas (Colaço et al 2003, Onar 2002, Ratsh et al 2001. Outros autores como Regodon et al (1992) que mensuraram o volume craniano e Vite et al (1997) quantificaram o volume ventricular encefálico. Cada corte de imagem tomográfica foi analisado, nele identificado o SVSD e com uso da radiografia digital, relacionada com pontos de referência anatômicos.…”
