We present a coupled continuum formulation for the electrostatic, chemical, thermal and mechanical processes in battery materials. Our treatment applies on the macroscopic scale, at which electrodes can be modelled as porous materials made up of active particles held together by binders and perfused by the electrolyte. Starting with the description common to the field, in terms of reaction-transport partial differential equations for ions, variants of the classical Poisson equation for electrostatics, and the heat equation, we add mechanics to the problem. Our main contribution is to model the evolution of porosity as a consequence of strains induced by intercalation, thermal expansion and mechanical stresses. Recognizing the potential for large local deformations, we have settled on the finite strain framework. We present a detailed computational study of the influence of the dynamically evolving porosity, upon ion distribution, electrostatic potential fields, charge-discharge cycles and mechanical force generated in the cell.

Dependence of microstructure parameters on the resolution of focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) images was evaluated for nickel-yttria stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ) electrode of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Three dimensional microstructure was reconstructed by FIB-SEM images at voxel size of 3 nm which is the highest resolution among the reported SOFC researches. Volume fraction, triple phase boundary (TPB) density and specific surface areas were calculated with various resolutions. Dependences of TPB density and specific surface areas on resolution were clearly shown. Changes of these parameters at high resolution were attributed to the surface roughness caused by the image drift in the scanning electron microscopy imaging. Accurate vales of TPB density and specific surface area were estimated by extrapolation from several values at coarser resolutions and compared with those at typical resolutions which are normally applied in conventional microstructure analysis of SOFC electrodes. The result indicates that the dependence on resolution should be taken into account for the quantitative analysis of microstructure parameters.

The anode/electrolyte interface behavior, and by extension, the overall cell performance of sodium‐ion batteries is determined by a complex interaction of processes that occur at all components of the electrochemical cell across a wide range of size‐ and timescales. Single‐scale studies may provide incomplete insights, as they cannot capture the full picture of this complex and intertwined behavior. Broad, multiscale studies are essential to elucidate these processes. Within this perspectives article, several analytical and theoretical techniques are introduced, and described how they can be combined to provide a more complete and comprehensive understanding of sodium‐ion battery (SIB) performance throughout its lifetime, with a special focus on the interfaces of hard carbon anodes. These methods target various length‐ and time scales, ranging from micro to nano, from cell level to atomistic structures, and account for a broad spectrum of physical and (electro)chemical characteristics. Specifically, how mass spectrometric, microscopic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, thermodynamic, and physical methods can be employed to obtain the various types of information required to understand battery behavior will be explored. Ways are then discussed how these methods can be coupled together in order to elucidate the multiscale phenomena at the anode interface and develop a holistic understanding of their relationship to overall sodium‐ion battery function.
