Quantification of Antioxidant Phenolic Compounds in a New Chrysanthemum Cultivar by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detection and Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: The flowers of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. have been used as an herbal tea and in traditional medicine, and the plant has been developed to produce horticultural cultivars of various colors and shapes. In this study, a new chrysanthemum cultivar with dark purple petals (C. morifolium cv. ARTI-Dark Chocolate; ADC) was developed by radiation-induced mutation breeding of its original cultivar with purple striped white petals (C. morifolium cv. Noble Wine, NW). The phenolic profile and antioxidant property of … Show more

“…Ranges of phenolic compounds found are in accordance with those of Han et al. (), who found 76 to 1,171 µg/g of dry matter of different bioactive components in chrysanthemum morifolium flower. They further explained that compounds such as luteolin‐7‐ O ‐β–glucoside, chlorogenic acid, luteolin, and apigenin attenuate the oxidative damage by nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway activation.…”

“…Spectra test of both extracts shows phenolic compounds; our results are in coincidence with Silverstein et al [24]. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry used to identify different substances within a test sample such as plants sample [25] in this study GC-mass results appear that leaves and flowers of the plant were tested, rich with phenolic compounds this result is consistent with Han et al [26] and Sheikh et al [27].…”

“…C. zawadskii extracts inhibited adipogenesis by suppressing the expression of transcriptional factors genes in 3T3-L1 adipocytes [27,28]. Chrysanthemum morifolium is reported to exert a variety of bioactive effects associated with its major components, notably flavonoids and phenolic acids [15][16][17]29]. Nevertheless, information on the anti-obesity effect of C. morifolium remains insufficient.…”
